Ethos, reconnect, emulate — these are the principles of biomimicry.

Nature is full of solutions for us, but it’s up to us to find and implement them. This is where Natural Designs comes in.

NATURAL DESIGNS brings illumination, innovation, and resolution to people, businesses, and communities in three ways: Consultation, Project work, Education

Depending on your particular challenge, Byron, may employ all three methodologies.
There is no singular way to leverage nature’s brilliance when solving problems. This is the beauty and excitement of biomimicry.

How We Work

NATURAL DESIGNS poses the challenging questions that need answers:

  • What are you trying to achieve?

  • How do you become more of the E, the S, or the G in ESG (environment, society, governance)?

  • How do you become more effective?

  • How do you create something more efficient, something that runs better, is less expensive to make and/or operate, uses less resources, has a simpler design, and accomplishes many different goals without negative impact?

The Process

There are three general phases of work for all clients:

  1. Scoping of the issue – what's the problem/what’s happening and what is the desired outcome?

  2. Discovery – digging in on the problem(s), determining what is needed to move forward

  3. Evaluation – creation of the solution, testing of the solution

Bio-plastic collaboration with UVM

Natural Designs LLC is collaborating with the University of Vermont (UVM) to implement innovative bioplastics solutions in the agricultural industry. By working with existing bioplastics companies, the partnership focuses on introducing their products to the sectors that can benefit most from transitioning to sustainable practices. Leveraging biomimicry principles, these bioplastics are designed to reduce environmental impact by being biodegradable and compostable, supporting healthier soil ecosystems and reducing plastic waste. This collaborative effort aims to connect cutting-edge materials with industries ready to embrace a more sustainable and regenerative approach to their operations.

One Company to highlight is https://www.newlight.com/ which has observed how nature draws carbon from the atmosphere and has developed a method to create plastics from aircarbon.

Collaboration with UVM on waste-to-resource chemistry for deterrents for crops and structures!

Natural Designs LLC has partnered with the University of Vermont (UVM) Chemistry Lab to implement a groundbreaking approach to pest management through the use of vexterrents—innovative, eco-friendly deterrent solutions. These products leverage natural chemical compounds to repel pests without harming them, non-target organisms, or the environment. By collaborating with UVM’s experts, Natural Designs has refined formulations that degrade into benign constituents, ensuring no lasting environmental impact. This partnership bridges cutting-edge green chemistry with practical agricultural applications, offering farmers an effective alternative to toxic pesticides and advancing sustainable practices that promote healthier ecosystems and safer food production.

The University of Vermont (UVM) has earned the number one ranking on the 2024 “Best Schools for Making an Impact” list of public universities and colleges, a Best Value College category published by The Princeton Review, a leading college admissions services company.
